The name Contadi Castaldi is a synthesis of the ancient history of Franciacorta, its 19 municipalities and their vocation for outstanding agriculture. In the 16 th century, when the Venetian Republic was at the height of its splendor, Franciacorta produced food and wine destined for the tables of princes, kings and rich merchants. For Franciacorta, the beautiful city of Venice was the market of choice for introducing its wines. In medieval times the “contadi” were the counties of Franciacorta, small areas of land known for their outstanding agricultural products. The “castaldi” were the lords of the counties, responsible for governing the lands.
When the Franciacorta region was at the peak of its development in the 1980’s, Vittorio and Mariella Moretti decided to convert the brickyard into a winery. Its large spaces and long tunnels where the bricks were fired proved to be the perfect place for ageing Franciacorta wine.
The vines for the Franciacorta Brùt grow in the Contadi Castaldi’s vineyards located all over the Franciacorta region to the west of Brescia in Lombardia. The vines has an average age of 18 years. At the harvest the grapes were selected from the best vineyards in the 19 municipal areas of Franciacorta and sorted followed by a gentle, gradual pressing of clusters with fractioning of the must. The first fermentation and ageing lasted 7 months - partly in steel tanks and partly in oak-barriques. Following bottling the wine matured on the lees for 20 to 26 months. After disgorgement the wine aged a further 3 - 4 months in the bottles.
Longevity 10-15 years.
